2024, installation, single channel video, HD; embossed paper.
A Piece of Paper is an installation, composed of one video and embossed paper within an office-like setting, reflecting on the violence embedded in neoliberal working environments, and more specifically, in the moment of a job dismissal. The office-like setting invites the audience to sit at a desk, with a projector simulating a company meeting. On the desk, viewers can browse documents from workplaces that informed the research process of the project.
On the walls, almost imperceptible, is a composition of embossed paper that translates the transcription of a dismissal meeting into a sculptural object. The nearly illegible text seeks to highlight absurdity and violence, displaying the gender imbalance within a mass of words. On the left, one filled sheet alongside five blank sheets reflects my interventions during the dismissal meeting; on the right, six filled sheets record my bossβs interventions.
The embossed paper is produced by applying manual pressure onto a relief woodblock. To create the woodblocks, the transcript of the audio recording of an employment dismissal meeting was laser-engraved onto wooden boards of different species and thicknesses. The depth of the relief depends on both the type of wood and the laser engraving speed.
Through experimentation with different wood species, board thicknesses, and engraving speeds, a series of test prints was produced on papers of varying weights. These samples reveal differences in texture and colour, determined by the pressure applied during the embossing process and the degree of charring caused by the laser engraving. These experimental embossings were presented in Noranje Space during the South Explorer Rotterdam 2026 Open Studios.
